Dr. Claudia Garcia Moreno, World Health Organization
December 1, 2011
Leading the World Health Organization’s (WHO) efforts to address gender based violence (GBV), Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno, M.D., coordinated the first ever WHO Multi-Country Study on Women’s Health and Domestic Violence Against Women in 2005. The study collected evidence from over 24,000 women in 15 sites in 10 countries representing diverse cultural settings. Dr. Garcia-Moreno recognized that in order to get recognition for the role of gender inequity and GBV in health, scientific evidence was needed. Subsequently, she focused her work on GBV prevention and is currently leading a process to generate guidelines for healthcare response through a systematic review of evidence. Dr, Garcia-Moreno is making a remarkable impact in the field by promoting and supporting emerging gender and health researchers in developing countries to encourage country-level research. Undoubtedly, she has made a huge contribution to the global body of research evidence on addressing GBV, either directly or through her inspiration of others.
