Countdown to the Conference

Countdown to the Conference

It seemed like a perfect high school romance. Johanna Orozco and Juan Ruiz, Jr had known each other since they were small kids in Cleveland, Ohio. But after a pattern of controlling behavior and actions, the 16-year-old Johanna broke up with him. He retaliated by firing a shotgun at her face. Following a marathon of surgeries, Johanna began to share her personal story to confirm the importance of policies and programs to educate young people about intimate partner violence (IPV).

On Friday, March 30, Johanna will be the keynote speaker at our National Conference on Health & Domestic Violence here in San Francisco. Now the Teen Educator at the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center of Greater Cleveland, Ms. Orozco has appeared on "Oprah," and told her story on "The View" alongside Vice President Joe Biden in February (Teen Dating Violence Prevention & Awareness Month).

In addition to Ms. Orozco, the opening keynote will feature Dr. Claudia Garcia Moreno of the World Health Organization and Dr. Linda Degutis, Director of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention & Control.
