Day 10: Raising Voices, Uganda

Raising Voices is a non-profit organization working toward the prevention of violence against women and children by catalyzing social change in communities. The organization works to prevent violence by addressing its root causes, such as traditional gender roles and the imbalance of power between women and men. According to Raising Voices Co-Founder and Co-Director Lori Michau, the organization, “envisions relationships, families, and communities where women and children’s voices are heard, their rights are respected, and they can live free of violence.”

Raising Voices focuses on prevention approaches that strive to change attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate violence against women. The organization uses a variety of communications methods to assist with this goal. One of their most successful communications tools have been the “power posters” they distribute in the SASA! Activist Kit for Preventing Violence Against Women and HIV. SASA! Is a prevention approach that seeks to address core drivers of violence. According to Lori, the posters, “are an example of how complex concepts of power are made accessible for women and men in the community, provocatively and constructively encouraging critical thinking and action on the fundamental drivers of violence against women.” The posters are being used in over 50 communities in 10 countries around the region.

“We believe that the most effective accessible, does not blame or shame, and inspires critical thinking or calls the audience to action,” said Lori. “Creating new and exciting communications materials while staying true to these values is a challenge that keeps us constantly innovating.”
