Day 2: Puntos de Encuentro
November 26, 2013
Puntos de Encuentro is an organization in Nicaragua that works with women to promote gender equity, respect for diversity, and healthy relations based on mutual respect.
The organization uses mass media as an awareness-building vehicle and leverages the popularity of soap operas in Central and South America to amplify their messages. They develop innovative television series, mixing a soap opera format with stories that shine a light on violence.
To address the widespread issue of violence against women and children, the organization developed a successful television series called Alerta y Puestas. Contra Los Explotadores Sexuales to promote awareness of the issue, and encourage people to speak out when they see it happening in their own communities. By using a familiar communication format as a backdrop—the soap opera—the organization has created an innovative way to reach their audience with messages about violence detection and prevention.
