“Becoming Myself” Book Tour
May 10, 2006
The Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF) and retailer Marshalls are bringing the newly released book, Becoming Myself by Willa Shalit, to life for high school students in New York, Chicago and Boston.
The tour is giving students messages about self esteem, staying true to oneself, and the importance of healthy relationships, which are woven throughout the book.
Becoming Myself is an inspiring collection of essays from diverse and notable women on the experience of being female. It includes 67 original essays from celebrities and writers, including Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, J.K. Rowling, Maya Angelou, Kate Spade, and FVPF Founder and President Esta Soler. The essays offer insight into how these exceptional women became who they are today.
The tour features a lively, interactive seminar with Shalit, FVPF representative Jeanine Hays, and a celebrity in each city. In New York City on Monday, May 8th, students at St. Jean Baptiste High School heard from actress and singer Vanessa Williams, who recounted her personal story of growing up female. On Wednesday, May 10th, students at Chicago’s William Jones College Prep will hear former United States Senator Carol Moseley Braun recount her personal story. And on Friday, May 12th, actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler of HBO’s “Sopranos” will speak in the Boston area at Noonan Business Academy in Dorchester to share her story of growing up female.
In addition to the Becoming Myself Tour, Marshalls will hold an in-store donation program benefiting the FVPF from Sunday, May 14th to May 27th, allowing customers to give a dollar for domestic violence awareness and prevention at check-out. Becoming Myself is available at all Marshalls locations. Partial proceeds from the book go to the Family Violence Prevention Fund.
