Leading Domestic Violence Expert Applauds Senator Reid For Attention to Family Violence During Tough Economic Times

Statement of Family Violence Prevention Fund President Esta Soler:

“At a time when the need for services is greater than ever and domestic violence programs across the country are struggling mightily to meet the need, we support Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for drawing attention to this important issue.

While unemployment and a poor economy do not cause domestic violence, the stress they cause can exacerbate already-volatile or violent situations. Further, victims with fewer resources find it especially difficult to protect themselves and their children, and shelters and programs that are struggling cannot offer as many services and supports as victims need. These factors combine to create grave danger for families experiencing violence – violence that too often escalates to homicide. In fact, as Senator Reid undoubtedly knows, Nevada has had one of the highest rates of domestic homicide in the country in past years.

We appreciate the Senate Majority Leader’s comments, and commend his attention to the issue. We look forward to working with both House and Senate leaders to ensure that the federal government funds the domestic violence service and prevention programs the nation so urgently needs.”
