Laura Talmus Joins FUTURES as Executive Vice President of Strategic Initiatives

Seasoned development professional and youth advocate brings over 30 years of experience to violence prevention organization

SAN FRANCISCO (March 18, 2014) – Laura Talmus has been named executive vice president of strategic initiatives at Futures Without Violence (FUTURES), a national nonprofit working to end violence against women and children worldwide. As part of the executive team, Talmus will lead innovative campaigns to engage donors, position the organization for growth, and support FUTURES’ growing portfolio in the area of youth violence prevention and education.

“Laura’s passion for violence prevention is evident in her extensive work with nonprofits—including her own, which she founded to educate the public about social isolation which is one of the root causes of bullying and suicide among youth,” said Futures Without Violence Founder and President Esta Soler. "Her wealth of knowledge and expertise in this area will complement our initiatives to address and reverse the effects of violence on children.”

After observing her daughter Lili’s challenges to fit in at school, Talmus and her husband Ace Smith founded Beyond Differences, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending social isolation among middle school students. Earlier this year, Talmus was honored with the 2014 Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award from the Marin County Human Rights Commission for her work with the organization.

Talmus previously served as executive director of the western region of American Jewish World Service, where she ran multi-million dollar annual campaigns from major gift funders and foundations. Prior to joining American Jewish World Service, Talmus served as a the president and founder of Laura Talmus Associates,a fundraising and consulting firm specializing in major gift capital campaigns, special events, and elected candidates and officials.

Talmus has also provided pro bono fundraising services to an array of nonprofit organizations, including the Breast Cancer Fund, Equal Rights Advocates, Marin School, and the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center.
