We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Dr. Cerin

We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Dr. Cerina Fairfax, killed by her husband former Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax this week in Virginia. Our thoughts are with her family, loved ones, and all those impacted by this devastating act of violence.

This tragedy highlights an ongoing pattern that continues to put lives at risk. A woman is five times more likely to be killed if her abuser has access to a firearm, and domestic violence-related murder suicides occur more than once a day in the United States.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

We all have a role to play in recognizing warning signs, supporting survivors, and preventing harm before it escalates.

Black Maternal Health week highlights the challenges Black mothers face in pregnancy and childbirth, and recognizes the vital work of Black-led doulas, community health workers, and advocates driving change to reduce their high rates of maternal death.

At FUTURES, we know that addressing domestic violence is a critical part of maternal health. Violence during pregnancy puts lives at risk, and Black women, especially in rural communities, often face even greater barriers to care and support.

That’s why we’ve launched our new Rural Maternal Health Initiative, focused on understanding these realities and advancing solutions shaped by the communities themselves.
